Blog Post Header_A Lifeline During Water Shortages

Southern Africa is facing a growing water crisis. From here in South Africa to the rural communities of Mozambique, droughts and aging infrastructure are making clean, reliable water access a daily struggle. In Namibia and Botswana, the effects of prolonged dry spells are impacting not only families and communities, but also agriculture and wildlife.

But there is a water crisis solution that empowers individuals, communities, and businesses to take control of their water security: JoJo water tanks! Our durable, high-quality tanks offer a lifeline during water shortages, whether used for rainwater harvesting or as a backup water supply when municipal systems fail.

Water Shortages Across Southern Africa

The need for reliable water storage is becoming increasingly urgent across Southern Africa. Here’s a closer look at the challenges faced by different countries in the region:

  • South Africa: Regions like the Western Cape continue to experience seasonal droughts and water restrictions. Even in higher rainfall areas like KwaZulu Natal, aging infrastructure, leaking pipes, and a lack of maintenance regularly disrupt the municipal water supply. In Johannesburg, the situation is particularly critical, with thousands of water cuts reported this year and concerns about a potential system collapse. JoJo water storage tanks are a vital tool for residents and businesses across South Africa, allowing them to harvest rainwater and store municipal water for use during dry spells or disruptions in service.
  • Namibia: The severe drought from October 2023 to April 2024 has had a devastating impact, causing acute food and water insecurity for over 1.4 million people. In such arid conditions, rainwater harvesting and backup water storage in JoJo tanks are essential for both agricultural and domestic use.
  • Botswana: Extended droughts since late 2023 have put immense pressure on Botswana’s water resources, impacting both agriculture and wildlife. JoJo tanks provide a crucial buffer, enabling communities to store water for essential needs during periods of inconsistent rainfall.
  • Mozambique: Drought conditions are disrupting water access and increasing vulnerability across Mozambique, where roughly half of the country’s population live without access to clean drinking water.

JoJo’s Water Shortage Solutions

  • Rainwater Harvesting: Our tanks enable households and businesses to capture and store rainwater, reducing reliance on municipal water systems and easing the strain on shared resources. This is especially important in areas with aging infrastructure or inconsistent rainfall.
  • Backup Storage During Water Cuts: With JoJo tanks, communities and individuals can store backup water for use during outages, water restrictions, or times of drought. This provides peace of mind and ensures access to water for essential needs, even when the taps run dry.

We offer a variety of water storage solutions to suit your needs, including municipal backup systems, rainwater harvesting systems, and fully integrated systems that combine both.

Whether you need a discreet underground tank for an urban environment, a slimline tank to fit a narrow space, or a large-capacity vertical tank for rainwater harvesting, we have the perfect solution to a scarcity of water in your immediate area:

Vertical Water Storage Tanks

Our classic vertical tanks are available in a wide range of sizes, from 260 litres to 20,000 litres. They are perfect for rainwater harvesting, municipal backup, and general water storage.

Underground Water Storage Tanks

Ideal for maximising space and maintaining aesthetics, our underground tanks are perfect for urban settings.

Our tanks are built to last, constructed with UV-resistant polyethylene that can withstand the harsh Southern African climate. This ensures a reliable and long-lasting water storage solution, even in extreme conditions. No matter what your water storage needs are, JoJo has a solution to help you ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply.

Best Practices for Effective Use of Water Tanks

To get the most out of your JoJo tank, follow these simple guidelines:

  • Strategic Installation (if harvesting rainwater): Position your tank in an area with maximum rain catchment potential, such as under a downpipe or in a location where it can collect runoff from a roof.
  • Maintenance: Regularly clean your tank to prevent contamination and ensure optimal performance. In the case of rainwater harvesting, this also includes removing debris from gutters and leaf catchers.
  • Efficient Water Usage: Use your stored water wisely, prioritising essential activities during drought periods. Consider using greywater for irrigation or toilet flushing to conserve your stored water for drinking and cooking.

Water scarcity is a growing concern across Southern Africa, but JoJo tanks offer a practical and sustainable solution to solve water shortage issues for your household. By harnessing the power of rainwater harvesting and providing reliable backup storage, our tanks empower individuals, businesses, and communities to take control of their water security.
